One of the most fascinating things Justin and I have accidentally stumbled upon while in Oregon was the Albany, OR Carousel Museum. When we walked in, we discovered it was FAR more than a museum! An incredibly dedicated team of volunteers has taken on a 15 year project to build an entire carousel by hand. Hand carved animals, hand painted, hand carved everything! There will be 52 animals on this carousel, with hundreds of other hand made faces, flowers, and even seasonal animals that will only be used during special times. The attention to detail and the amount of volunteering craftsman blew my mind! They were in year 9 of the process. After it is done, they will tear down the building they used to build it, build a new one just for the carousel, and put it all together inside. I imagine it could really put this small town on the map for tourists. I hope someday that I can return and ride that carousel!
We are now in Seattle, and heading to the Pike Place Market and the fist Starbucks. I have been there before and it is surprisingly nondescript. But, it seems like we should take a picture there, since we are thankful for how much Starbucks has done for the specialty coffee industry. Tomorrow we will be going to Atlas Coffee (where we purchase much of our green coffee from) to work in their cupping lab on a house blend just for Carabello Coffee. That should be exciting!
