Antigua is a beautiful, old city in Guatemala that has preserved much of the old baroque style architecture that was built in the 16th century. It is situated in a valley between three volcanoes. Coffee was cultivated along the slopes of these volcanoes first in Guatemala, as the next economic prospect once their former main export of indigo had ceased due to the advent of synthetic clothing dyes.
Finca San Ignacio is a special old estate in Antigua, located in the center of the valley. Still at an elevation of 1300-1600 MASL, but with a much harsher cold at times due to the winds and lack of rain. This stress actually helps the coffee, which matures slowly and is able to produce much more complexity than the sunnier edges of the valley.
Guatemalan coffees tend to be a favorite here in the midwest. The balanced, easy to drink flavor profile means it's a coffee to drink cup after cup of.
