Tanzania Lloma Peaberry

$7

Tanzania has become known for its peaberry coffee, but what does the term peaberry actually mean?

Coffee is the seed of the coffee cherry, a fruit.  Usually the cherries contain two seeds, which are flat on one side as you can see when looking at your regular coffee beans.  Peaberries occur when a coffee cherry only produces one seed.  That's right...most coffee cherries have twins, but a peaberry is an only child.  Since you can't tell whether the fruit contains one or two (or even three!) seeds, peaberries are identified and sorted after the cherries are harvested, de-pulped and processed.

This peaberry lot come to us from the Iyela Farmer Group who are part of the Lloma cooperative in Tanzania.  Regulations in Tanzania make it so that cooperatives are the only entities that can buy directly from farmers, which is why the name is Tanzania Lloma Peaberry.

Peaberries are smaller and denser than their regular-sized coffee cousins.  Since a peaberry seed receives all the nutrients of the cherry, many believe this heightens the flavor and sweetness of the bean.

We have never sourced a Tanzania peaberry coffee before, so we are eager for you to enjoy this special coffee!
