We have been purchasing a natural Ethiopian from Kayon Mountain for three years now. Kayon Mountain is the farm of Ismael Hassen Aredo. Many of his family members are also in coffee and have a great reputation for producing amazing coffees. Ismael offers financial support for his local community's building projects, such as schools and administrative buildings, along with many benefits for his seasonal workers like free transportation and competitively high wages.
We keep coming back to Kayon Mountain through our friends at Cafe Imports for their commitment to doing all things well. The farm is sustainably run, producing their own natural fertilizers, keeping quality shade through high amounts of indigenous trees and 40% of their farm unplanted. The varieties planted are several Jimma Agricultural Center bred varieties that are resistant to native diseases and maintain the high quality cup character of Guji landrace varieties. Once picked ripe, the cherries are dried for 2-3 weeks on African raised beds.
The results in the cup are everything we love in natural Ethiopians: explosive fruit, vibrancy, and a rich sweetness that frequently converts cream and sugar people to become black coffee drinkers!
