Carabello Coffee
Kayon Mountain Natural
South of Addis Ababa in the Guji zone of the Shakiso district lies the Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm. The 500 hectare property stretches across two Ethiopian villages, Taro and Sewana. Owner of the farm, Ismael Hassen Aredo began cultivating coffee in 2012 with his family by his side.
Currently, Ismael employs a staff of 25 full-time workers as well as 300 seasonal workers. To incentivize the work done on his farm, Ismael pays his seasonal employees higher wages than what is offered by surrounding mining jobs. Additionally, he provides transport to the farm for his employees and financially supports schools and other community projects.
At the Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm, both washed and natural coffees are produced. This particular natural coffee is a compilation of several native heirloom varieties. Natural coffees in Ethiopia are processed the same day they are harvested. They are sorted for quality, rinsed, and finally set out to dry anywhere between 8-25 days depending on the weather.
