Rwandan coffee at its best is some of the finest coffee on the planet. Rwanda is situated on the coast of Lake Kivu, more like a sea than a lake, and is lush with rich forest throughout the country. The soil is volcanic, and in the region of Nyamasheke the elevations reach a soaring height. This micro-climate is extremely well suited for coffee.
Furaha Umwizeye Teuscher is the founder and president of "Kivu Belt", a group of producers and innovators who own a coffee estate and a few mills for processing coffee. Furaha is the brilliance behind this coffee. She has separated the coffee of the very high elevation village of Mahembe, and triple washed their coffee. This method ends up making it nearly 100% free of defects, with a vibrantly clean cup. This is not precedented in Rwandan coffee, which has historically always had some rustic flavors in the cup due to imprecise sorting and processing.
The result is this splendid, high quality coffee that should please coffee lovers of all kinds.
