Fatoum Muslot is the owner of The Pearl of Tehama exporting company. The business was founded in the 1970’s by her father, Ali Hibah Muslot. After his passing, the company was divided between her brothers but ultimately decided to separate in 2013. It was then that Fatoum stepped into ownership. Despite the male-oriented coffee industry in Yemen, Fatoum has overcome the challenges and taken the success of her business into her own hands. Now she continues the tradition of exporting coffee but also, with the help of her son, has established a center to improve coffee trade and cultivation. Additionally, she has established a bank of coffee related information in the hopes of benefiting future efforts to improve the industry.

Coffee from Bani Matari grows a bit differently than in other parts of the world. The plants are tall old growth which appear more like fruit trees in an orchard than coffee shrubs. Though this growing region usually combines its lots, Matari is one of the few that is traditionally kept separate. Fatoum and her family have long standing trade relationships with farming groups in this region. This lot was sourced from about 100 smallholder farmers who farm less than ½ a hectare of land. These farms sit at extremely high altitudes stretching from 2,000-2,400 meters above sea level.

In the Cup: Dark Cocoa, Date, Tobacco, Rustic Redwine, Raisin, Caramelized Sugar, Baking Spice, Syrupy Body
