Carabello Coffee
Bolivia Copacabana
Caranavi is the largest coffee producing region in Bolivia. Within this region is the 35 family community of Copacabana. Beginning in the 2000s, many countries invested in this region focusing efforts to cultivate coffee as an alternative to cocoa production. As a result, coffee infrastructure improved, and producers received education in better agricultural practices. The development of coffee production has continued, most recently with an emphasis on cup quality. The Bolivian government has been investing in coffee quality competitions as well as starting a seedling program.
The people of Caranavi are very proud to be coffee producers. Even the younger generations are involved in producing coffee here. Though cocoa is the most profitable crop, the government has placed limitations on how much it can be produced. Thus, it is common to see a mix of coca, coffee, and fruit grown within the same area.
In Caranavi, “Bolivia’s coffee capital,” harvest season means working around the clock. Producers sell their coffee in the cherry which is delivered to collection stations. These stations open at 5:00pm and close when the line dies down around midnight. The coffee is then transported to centralized washing stations. The depulping and washing of the coffee begins between 2-3:00am! Many small producers recruit family members to help during the harvest season, while larger producers will hire cosechadores (harvesters) at a premium. Because so many new farms are popping up across the region, labor during the harvest season is short.
