Cheers to 10 Years Aguilera Brothers Honey

Finca Chayote is located in the West Valley of Costa Rica, an area well known for its diverse microclimates and various cultivars. This is one of the seven farms that the Aguilera siblings manage. The brothers Felipe and Erasmo are Cup of Excellence winners who are carrying on a long standing family tradition of coffee production. 

Since the 1940s, the Aguilera family has been planting coffee. Now the family owns over 60 hectares of farmland and divides the work between all 12 Aguilera brothers and sisters. Felipe and Erasmo oversee most of the mill operations and drying areas. 

Throughout the family’s property, there are about 20 varieties cultivated. This coffee is a unique variety called San Roque (also known as San Roque Kenia). This variety is closely related to a celebrated Kenyan variety known as SL-28. San Roque was first created in Costa Rica and is now a variety grown across the country. 

The Aguileras hire between 40-100 coffee pickers each year. Wanting to give them a good wage, they have an interesting strategy for incentivizing picking the highest quality cherries. They pay higher prices for green cherries than they do for buckets of red! This way the pickers do an exquisite job sorting when they bring their cherry to be weighed. 

The Aguilera’s spirit to care for others extends beyond their farms and the mill. They are very active within their community and even built a soccer field close to their micromill for the community to enjoy.
