Kayon Mountain Natural

$7.50

The Kayon Mountain farm is located in the Shakiso woreda district. This world-renowned coffee producing district is located in the Guji zone of the Oromia region. Established in 2012, the Kayon Mountain farm was started by a family new to coffee farming. In addition to growing coffee, the family also runs several processing sites and exports coffee.

The farm sits on 150 hectares which is a conglomerate of volcanic and loamy soil . The permanent workers on the farm number around 30 people but during the October to January harvest the workers reach up to 450! The farm has around 3,500 coffee trees per hectare. False banana trees are scattered throughout the farm to provide shade. Focused on avoiding waste, the farm makes their own compost using coffee pulp.

The processing site for this coffee is located in Taro kebele. The Taro washing station has enabled local farmers to process their coffees without traveling long distances and obtain fair prices for their coffee. The Kayon Mountain farm has made a huge effort to support the community in Taro including building a local high school, supporting an orphanage, and distributing coffee seedlings to local farmers.

Note: This is a coffee that many of our customers are familiar with and for quite some time looked forward to having every summer. In years past, it was an absolute juicy fruit bomb. We took a little bit of a break in purchasing this particular coffee as it had been a little less fruity than we were used to—but the coffee we purchased this year brings back some of the fruity notes and is a really wonderful cup that includes some classic Ethiopian flavor notes.

In the Cup: Berries, Peaches & Cream, Milk Chocolate, Mild Citrus, Lingering Finish
