La Bendicion Maracaturra

by Carabello Coffee
Price $16.95

Maracaturra is a large bean cultivar, a cross between Caturra and Maragogype with unique flavor properties.  Our friend, Luis Alberto Balladarez has been planting a lot of this varietal among his farms, and it has consistently been a finalist in several Cup of Excellence competitions for him - this year placing 8th!  The potential for this varietal is high, given its complex acidity, intense sweetness, and the clean cup it produces.

Luis knows what to do to make this varietal shine.  The brightness and sweetness he gets out of these cherries is really impressive.  They are almost always very transparent and clean, with pronounced sweetness for a washed Central American coffee.  This is in part due to the hard work and dedication of the farming crew, but also to the varietal itself, which has great potential to produce exceptional flavor and sweetness when done well.

This lot of maracaturra comes to us from Finca La Bendicion, which is located outside of Jalapa, Nicaragua, very close to the Honduran border.  Incidentally, Jalapa is where the Jardin del Niños orphanage farm is located that we have helped with some irrigation and infrastructure investments.  So we are actually able to buy coffee from within a matter of kilometers from where some of the coffee profits have been invested.

The short of it is, we have been won over by this varietal and we always look forward to it.  We think you will too!

In the Cup

This coffee has a wonderful, effervescent acidity and a juicy body.  We taste notes of black cherry, honeydew, orange, and hibiscus, along with jasmine and tobacco.
