Sumatra is on its way!

We just shipped a big order of some new crop Sumatra Toba Batak Peaberry from Oakland, CA.  I expect it to be in our roaster next weekend!  Lintong coffees are farmed by the Batak peoples that are the indigenous tribe that works the coffee in this area.  This particular lot of coffee is from a family of collectors working in the Lintong Nihota area, who mainly buy much of their coffee direct from the farmers, rather than through the open markets where mixed qualities of coffee are usually mixed together.  I’m really excited about it!
This is the last week for Sulawesi, so, if you haven’t had any, don’t let this fabulous smooth coffee get by you!

The Best of NKY event on this past Thursday was a huge success!  The voting tally has not been announced that we know of yet, but it was an amazing opportunity to meet people and tell them about Velocity Bike and Bean.  We’ve already had 3 customers this morning who heard about us through that event.  Passing out free bags of coffee makes you very popular! :)   Lisa did an incredible job with our table, and it attracted a lot of attention to the shop.  Whether we win “best of” or not, it was really fun to tell more people about the shop and spread the word about this great little shop!  Here’s some pictures of our table and the event.

Best of NKY??

Velocity Bike & Bean is one of three finalist in this year’s Best of NKY competition in the Best Independent Coffeehouse category.  As Velocity is the cafe we roast out of, we can’t help but be thrilled to be a finalist and pulling for them to win.  After all, their customers are drinking our coffee!
The voting will occur during the Best of NKY 2012 Event Thursday, May 17 from 5:30 – 8:30PM at Receptions Conference Center in Erlanger, KY.  The event promises to be pretty sweet as the finalist in each of the 63 categories will be there strutting their wares and giving out tons of free samples.  Think of it as a “taste of NKY” type event.  Tickets are $20.
Emily will be there giving out free coffee samples (I will be conducting the MVCA bands in our annual Spring concert) and schmoozing with guests.  Wait, I’m not sure my wife schmoozes… OK, couldn’t resist writing “schmoozes.”  Call it a weak moment.  Nevertheless, she’d love a few familiar faces to swing by and cast a vote!
Check out the above link to their website for more info. We hope to see some of you there!
We’re Roasting This Coming Monday
It’s a busy time for me as a band director these days and this weekend my Advanced Band will be on its first-ever Spring band trip – some of you may remember these.  So… we’ll be moving our roast date to Monday.  That gives you a little extra time to get your orders in, but it also bumps our delivery back a day.  So… please plan accordingly!

Anderson Farmers Market Right Around the Corner
Once again Carabello Coffee will be back in action on Saturday mornings this summer at the Anderson Township Farmers Market.  Last season was such a great beginning for us and we are very blessed and excited to have the opportunity to return.  Now in its fifth year, the outdoor market season begins Saturday, May 26 from 9AM – 1PM.  Please plan to come out, get some fresh in-season local strawberries, listen to some live music, taste what the guest chef is cooking up and drink some Carabello Coffee!  More to come on the details soon!  Check out the Anderson Market website for their schedule of events.
Popsicles!!
This is Emily asking a question…if you saw a latte popsicle for sale at a farmers’ market…would you want to try it???  I’m perfecting a recipe, and I want to know if there is interest.  Feel free to comment and let me know!

Online Store Operational!

Online Store!
We will finally have a working online store and shopping cart on our website!  This will definitely revolutionize the way we take orders, so, hold onto your hats.  At some point we will begin to move everyone to ordering online, which will greatly simplify all these emails flying around.  So… Imagine it’s 12:30AM.  You’re laying in bed, tossing and turning, wondering why you and can’t seem to fall asleep.  Then it hits you… you’re about to run out of Carabello Coffee.  You roll over, reach for your Smartphone, pull up our website and place an order… immediately peace fills the room.  You smile, put the phone down and are sound asleep in three minutes.
We also hope to create a system for getting regular customers moved into subscriptions where you can set up how much coffee you’d like to receive and how often.  That way, it can be on auto-pilot and you can spend your brain power on more important things!
We will continue to tweak things with shipping, adding product and other details, but for now, we are relieved that it is actually working.  It was a looooooot of work!
Customer Choice!
It’s one of those times of the year when we need to make some choices on some new coffees.  We’ve just roasted the last of the Ethiopian Sidamo has our supply of Peru and Sulawesi are dwindling down.  Aiming to please where possible, we are very interested to know what YOU would like us to have on hand.
Is there a particular coffee we’ve offered in the past that really struck a chord and you’d like us to bring back?  Is there an origin you love that we have not carried in a while?  If so, let us know and we will see what we can land our hands on.
Keep a few things in mind… 1) Not all coffees are available at all times of the year.  2) Just because we can find a coffee from a particular origin doesn’t mean we can find one that meets our standards at this particular time.  E.g., last year’s Guatemala was amazing, but it’s not an automatic that right now there’s one that’s worth roasting out there.
All that said, we truly want to hear from you.  So, don’t be shy!  I will say that, last week we roasted a sample of a new Ethiopian Harrar and then pulled some espresso shots that blew our minds.  Imagine throwing some fresh blueberries in a blender and pulverizing them…. now simmer them up a bit on the stove and pour it into an espresso cup.  No joke… it was that epic (as the kids say).  I’m pretty sure we’ll be bringing that one in soon!

Breakfast Winners

The band at our school recently did a Carabello Coffee fundraiser to help pay for the cost of their band trip.  They are performing in a competition at Kings Island and are very excited about their first competition!  Anyway, Justin promised whoever sold the most bags of coffee that we would come over and make them a delicious breakfast of their choice.  SO…this morning we got up and made Liege Waffles, hash browns, homeade strawberry syrup, homeade whipped cream, eggs, and bacon for 3 very lucky junior high boys.  Thankfully they allowed us to have some as well.  Way to go Sam!!

Coffee Update!

I’m thrilled to announce that, to date, we have helped the Fine Arts Boosters (FAB) at Miami Valley Christian Academy raise more than $1,000 this school year – all from people drinking Carabello Coffee!  It’s so cool to see our vision for this business actually working.

Every two weeks Misty (our faithful “coffee elf”) delivers the coffee that parents have ordered to their children’s classroom.  The kids then tote it home to mom and dad in their book bags.  It’s a great little system.  Every bag earns FAB $2, which means that Misty has delivered over 500 bags of coffee this year alone!

Go Misty!!!  And Go FAB coffee drinkers!  Thank you for being willing to go the extra mile to make your coffee dollars count.

You’re Drinking Coffee Where?  A few weeks ago I sent out a text message letting people know that I was roasting and that they should get their orders in if they wanted something.   I get a text back from one of our customers that say, “Right now I’m drinking coffee in Costa Rica.”  Costa Rica?  “Lucky,” I think to myself.  As if that wasn’t cool enough, she ended up bringing me some coffee back as a gift – nice touch!  Drinking it reminded me of how great Costa Rican coffee can be and that I should probably get some in here this year.

Then, this past weekend a customer shows up at the café with some coffee he brought back from Colorado for me.  Apparently he was at a coffee shop outside of Boulder and thought if his poor old coffee roaster back home in KY.  Thanks Gary!  I brewed some up over the weekend and it ended up having a nice chocolate note to it.  It’s always fun to try another roaster’s coffee and be able to see what they’re doing.

As if that’s not enough, at our tasting on Saturday one of the couples tells me that they’re heading to Hawaii this week and that they’re going to bring me back some Kona.  Apparently when it rains it pours, even when it comes to bringing back some coffee for your coffee roaster.

So… if you’re traveling this year and happen upon a great coffee roaster in some part of the world… think of me.

Coffee Nova v.2 A Blast

This past Saturday one of the Coffee Nova participants paid us a nice compliment when he said, “This reminds me how much I enjoy educating people about coffee.”  He just happens to be a barista at Coffee Emporium who was invited to come along with a friend.  I thought it was cool that he enjoyed it.

He is the second barista from another café to join us for one of these events and I think it’s great to see that we’re doing something with these events that other places haven’t jumped on yet.  Also in attendance was a man who is preparing to open a new café in NKY.  He was in to check out our coffee and to get a feel for what we do.

So, time to begin planning Coffee Nova v. 3!  I think this time we’ll explore the effects of roast level on taste by taking a two or three coffees and roasting each of them to three different places in the roast spectrum: light, medium and dark.  Keep your eyes peeled.

“The Best Cup So Far”

How many cafes are you going to walk into and see that the “Brew of the Day” is an award winning coffee?  Easy answer… not many.  As far as we know, there are only two Cup of Excellence coffees available right now in all of Cincinnati… and we have one of them!

The other day one of the Velocity Bike & Bean regulars told me that the Rwanda Cup of Excellence is the best cup of coffee to date that he’s had at Velocity.  Today I put out 6 (six) fresh roasted bags of it.  So… get over here and snag one before they’re gone!

Coffee Nova v.2 A Success

Today was our second Coffee Nova event and it was a blast.  Eleven of us took two different coffees (Burundi and Rwanda) and explored 7 different brewing methods.  It was so cool to see how differently each brewing method changed the result in the cup.  When it was all said and done,  we all had a new appreciation for just how complex coffee can be – and for how much we short-change ourselves when we only brew it in an automatic drip coffee maker!

The traditional coffee maker did not even come close to equaling the flavor, aroma and complexity of the other methods.

Earth Day Event!

This Saturday at Sawyer Point along the Ohio River there is a great free event for earth day.  There will be plenty of great music, booths, kids events, and earth friendly products for sale.  Our coffee, as well as beautiful purses and bags made from recycled coffee sacks will be for sale as well.  The sale of these bags directly supports the orphanage we help to support.  Check out more here!

This week we are excited as we have the chance to meet with a coffee shop and a church locally in hopes of winning their business.  We are so blessed by our customers that are always out there helping us to spread the news about our little fledgling business.  Keep it up!

We have one spot left in each coffee tasting on Saturday-one at 10 and one at noon.  Let us know if you want to be that one spot!!  Have a blessed day!

We need your help!

As you know, we began this coffee venture as a way to be philanthropic with the profits.  We’ve also grown it as a side venture, devoting what time we can to it while we also maintain our teaching positions at MVCA.  So far we’ve been able to do both and succeed.

With the summer farmer’s market season upon us, we want to expand beyond the Anderson Township Market and have a booth at one or more additional markets.  However, with our present summer commitments and the reality of us traveling to Central America as well, Emily and I simply cannot add more to our plate.  So we turn to you.

We are looking for two to four people who believe in our mission and would be willing to help us “man a booth” at a market in the Cincy/NKY area this summer.  Responsibilities would be brewing and selling drip and whole bean coffee and pretty much sharing our story with the folks you come in contact with.  Truth is, the more we grow, the more we increase in our ability to give.

The commitment is roughly 6-8 hours, one day per week from the end of May to the end of September.  We are prepared to modestly compensate you for your time.

Obviously, there are a good bit of details left out in this blog entry.  If you are interested in helping and have the time and passion to throw into this, please write us and we can continue the conversation.  From what we experienced from our time last summer at the Anderson Market, the potential for increase is pretty awesome if we can find the right people to partner with us!

Coffee Review Set to Cup New Rwanda CoE #17 and Burundi A+ Kayanza

Rwanda Cup of Excellence #17 Lot Hits Shelves This Week

I am very excited to tell you that Kenneth Davids of Coffee Review has decided to review our Rwanda Cup of Excellence #17 Lot and new Burundi A+ Kayanza Bourbon coffees in his May coffee review.  If Kenneth Davids and Coffee Review are new to you, let me just say that it was his book called Home Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival that I read when I first began to roast.  He is widely considered an authority in the coffee industry and a credible voice in the specialty coffee scene.

Every month he reviews coffees on his website www.coffeereview.com.  Each review is focused on specific types of coffees.  Roasters and coffee lovers from all over the world nominate coffees that they would like him to review and he chooses 40 coffees to include cup in each.  He then blogs about the top 10 coffees.  When I saw that he will be reviewing coffees from Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania this May, I decided that I had nothing to lose if I nominated these two coffees.  When I got his response that we had been chosen I was very excited!

Many people (consumers and coffee industry folk alike) look to his reviews to find great coffees and to read about roasters who are producing something exceptional.  A favorable review could suddenly garner us some attention from people who’ve never heard of us.

So, next week I’ll be roasting up samples of both coffees and submitting them for his cupping.  May 10 he will unveil the review and we’ll see how we did – or didn’t so!

All that to say, it’s exciting just to be included!

Introducing Burundi A+ Kayanza Bourbon

This week we are unveiling a new coffee that will be sure to become a favorite for many of you.  Back in December I was looking for a coffee that was exceptional and my broker said,

The New Burundi A+ Kayanza Bourbon Hits Shelves

“You have to try this new Burundi we have; it’s phenomenal.”  On his recommendation I gave it a whirl, and I am sure glad I did!  Burundi is a tiny land-locked country in East Africa that borders Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania.  From what I’m told, this year marks the first crop of true specialty grade coffee that Burundi has produced.  It is very similar in taste profile to Rwanda, but has a beautiful complexity and a mix of savory and sweet flavors that make for a delightful cup.  What I like about it is that it’s a pretty bold flavor profile, which is probably owing to the bourbon (pronounced burr-BOHN) varietal.  Bourbon is big in flavor and this coffee definitely will get your attention if you like something that is rich.  Expect a great mix of fruity sweetness and chocolaty spice.

Coffee Nova v. 2 Beginning to Fill Up

On April 21, 2012 we will be hosting our second coffee tasting event of the year.  As of now, there are two spots left at the 10AM session and the 12Noon session is still wide open.  For those of you who want to do something fun and educational around coffee, this event will be a great time.  We will be examining the effects of brewing method on the taste we experience in the cup.  Read more about Coffee Nova v.2 here.

Shopping Cart on the Way

We are working hard to get a shopping cart up and running soon.  Sorry if you saw a million facebook updates…we were unaware that each time we worked on the store it put an automatic facebook status update.  OOPS!  We will soon carry green coffee, roasted coffee, t-shirts and more available for online purchase and nationwide shipping.  Hooray!

In February we held the first of a series of coffee tastings we call Coffee Nova.  We began with v.1 which was a straight-forward cupping of four distinct coffees, contrasting them in two flights.  Those who attended had such a great time they asking when we would hold v.2.  I’m happy to say that the wait is over.
On Saturday, April 21 we will host Coffee Nova v.2 at our roaster location - Velocity Bike & Bean in Florence, KY.  Mark your calendars and reserve your spots soon!

Here are the details.

Coffee Nova v2: Exploring the Effects of Brewing Method on Taste

Where:       Velocity Bike & Bean, 7560 Burlington Pike in Florence, KY
Sessions:   10AM & 12NOON
Seating:     Limited to 6 participants at each session
Cost:          $15 (Includes $5 Velocity gift card and 5oz. bag of coffee)

Event Description
In Coffee Nova v.2 we will use various brewing methods as a way of discovering the impact each method has on what we taste in the cup.  We will do two flights, tasting a single coffee in each as brewed the following ways:
  • Clever Coffee Dripped
  • Chemex
  • Aeropress
  • Espresso

Then we’ll taste the same coffee as made in a traditional coffee pot.  (We may even have a surprise brewing method or two as a special treat, who knows!)  The fun will be discovering how each brewing method brings out something different in the coffee.  We’re even going to include a tasting of the Rwanda Cup of Excellence in this one!

I should warn you… a tasting like this could result in you ditching your traditional coffee pot!  Just saying.
Flight 1
Burundi A+ Kayanza Bourbon
