Rwanda Kigeyo

Located on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rwanda’s Western Province, the COOPAC cooperative is offering some of the highest quality coffees in Rwanda. Quality was the goal from its founding in 2001: produce quality coffee to raise the quality of life for its many members. Today the cooperative boasts 2,198 members with 50 established washing stations—12 containers of fair trade coffee have been exported this year alone!

COOPAC has embraced several organic practices and engages in fair trade community initiatives. They are currently working toward providing shade tree saplings and agroforestry education to all of its members. Additionally, they have been able to construct schools, clinics, roads, bridges and develop programs for women and youth in their community.

This coffee is a bourbon microlot from the Kigeyo washing station. The coffee cherries were delivered to the station the same day they were picked. This coffee was then sorted, depulped, and fermented in a large tank for up to 18 hours. After that, the coffee was soaked in water for 24 hours, then the mucilage was removed and the coffee was set on raised beds to dry.

Fun fact: If the growing area of Lake Kivu sounds vaguely familiar, that's because our coffees from the Rebuilding Women's Hope Cooperative also come from this region. Though RWH is located in the D.R. Congo, Lake Kivo is divided by the D.R. Congo and Rwanda.
